Proven durability: Graphic Concrete surfaces stand the test of time
BY GRAPHIC CONCRETE 18.03.2025
Time will ultimately reveal how Graphic Concrete surfaces will look in 50 or 100 years, but our experience gives us strong confidence that they will remain virtually unchanged. The Graphic Concrete technique integrates the surface design into the concrete itself, ensuring it lasts as long as the material does.
In this edition, we showcase the durability of our solution with reference projects spanning up to 20 years, demonstrating how Graphic Concrete withstands the elements over time.
Tervapääskynen Residential Building, Helsinki
2011
2025
Inspired by a newspaper image of cows, the architect sought to reflect the area’s history in the façade of this residential building. The patterns have been remained clearly on the concrete surface after 14 years.
This parking garage, built at the former Nokia Mobile Phones headquarters, may look even better now than it did 18 years ago. The only visible aging is from vine marks on adjacent wood latticework, while the Graphic Concrete patterns retain their sharp contrasts and clarity.
Our long list of references, dating back to the mid-2000s, is the best testament to Graphic Concrete’s durability. In Finland’s harsh climate—ranging from ice and snow to heat waves—Graphic Concrete surfaces have proven their resilience.
Memory Tracks Pavement,Helsinki
2004
2024
This was the first Graphic Concrete project to feature plant patterns on ground slabs. Completed in 2004, the patterns remain well preserved.
Milano Triennale Pavilion, Milan
2012
2018
Built for the Take Nord Shape exhibition in 2012, this Finnish pavilion at the Triennale di Milano showcased various Graphic Concrete patterns, highlighting sustainable architecture and eco-friendly design.
Winner of the Finnish Concrete Structure of the Year 2009, this striking black façade features inscriptions from historical archives, including peasants’ bookmarks, royal letters, and contemporary digital symbols.
One of our oldest references confirm that Graphic Concrete edges remain sharp and contrasts stay intact. Time has left its mark only in areas where water regularly seeps over the surface—an effect common to all concrete facades and easily remedied with high-pressure cleaning.
Fortaleza Hall and the Commons, SC Johnson Headquarters, Racine Wisconsin
2010
2018
At the heart of Fortaleza Hall, a curving concrete wall serves as an architectural centrepiece. The surface features a Graphic Concrete mural where photographic images were seamlessly transferred onto the concrete.
Graphic Concrete surfaces do not attract dirt more than plain concrete, and in many locations, they have been found to resist graffiti. Street artists often appreciate the intricate designs and leave them untouched. Of course, like any concrete surface, Graphic Concrete can also be treated for additional protection.
Through these projects, we continue to see the lasting value of Graphic Concrete—ensuring both aesthetic appeal and long-term performance.
Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about the projects.
