The Ringweg Zuid Groningen project, designed by Syb van Breda & Co architects, is a visionary blend of infrastructure, history, and art. This national-level project reimagines Groningen's landscape, creating greener spaces while honoring the city's rich heritage. The architects faced the unique challenge of integrating modern roadways with historical aesthetics, using innovative solutions like Graphic Concrete technology to tell Groningen’s stories.
From viaducts designed in the city's iconic brick architecture to hidden underpasses surrounded by greenery, the project combines functionality with aesthetics. Graphic Concrete panels, featuring historical snapshots like the joyful arrival of Canadian soldiers after WWII, moments of local football team's victory, scenery of horse racing track, swimming lesson ladies and old map of Groningen, offer a fresh way to experience the city’s past.

Despite challenges, such as perfecting the delicate images transfer to concrete, the team achieved, creating a project that turns roadways into canvases of history. More than just an infrastructure upgrade, the Ringweg Zuid Groningen is a tribute to the city’s legacy, shaping both its present and future with creativity and care.
